Our One Goal Was Achieved

After weeks of hard work, placing top in our Mid-Island League, succeeding at North Islands, and competing hard at the Island Championships, the Senior Girls Soccer squad achieved what they had set out to accomplish: earning a berth to AA Provincials. Every girl on the team was excited as the bus left the Brentwood gates on Wednesday for the three hour drive to Campbell River, this year’s host. As soccer is an extremely popular sport on the Island, and with almost 300 high schools with a soccer program in the province, making it to Provincials was a huge achievement for this year’s team. It is the first time in five years that the Brentwood Senior Girls team has made it to the championships. Although we knew every game was going to be against top-level teams, and certainly a challenge, we were excited for the opportunity to play with the top 16 AA teams in BC. The tournament started on Thursday morning against a tough squad from St. Thomas More. Brentwood held them off until the last 15 minutes of the game, where they unfortunately scored two quick goals. The team took the loss in stride however, and came out strong against Abbotsford that afternoon. With a fantastic goal by Kaela S, Allard ‘16, Brentwood triumphed in a hard-fought battle against Abbotsford in a 1-0 win. The following morning would come with the final pool-play game against Valleyview of Kamloops. Unfortunately, Brentwood was not able to pull off the win, and fighting injuries, would go into the second game of Friday unable to pull off the win, losing a tough 1-0 game to MEI. Early Saturday morning Brentwood would then have to battle with West Point Gray, and with fatigue and injury setting in, the squad fell to another 1-0 loss. The Brentwood team ended up placing 12th in the province, and despite a tough and extremely physically demanding tournament, it was a great experience that included a 70’s themed banquet and some very high level play of the beautiful game. Congratulations to Sarah L, Mackenzie ‘16, for winning the Commissioner’s Award for Brentwood and a huge thank you to Coach Horth and Coach Fougner for leading the team to such an amazing season. For the members of the team in Grade 12, this was the last time to wear the Brentwood jersey, and we thank you for your commitment to the soccer program here at Brentwood. It was an excellent finish to the squad’s season, and our one goal for the year was achieved! Gina B, Mackenzie ‘17
