National Rowing Championships & Canada Cup Regattas
The mood was chipper and light as eight Brentwood students and two fabulous mentors left for Rowing Canada’s National Rowing Championships, hosted by the city of Burnaby and the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club. Aidan W, Joe M, Phil K & newcomer Justin M all competed in the Men’s single scull landing in the E, H, G, and G finals respectively. Kate LW & Danielle M finished third in the D final in the Women’s pair, and were the 4th fastest Junior Women’s pair. Peter L & Lion T had a fantastic regatta finishing with a Silver medal in the Junior Men’s pair, only a boat length behind Rowing Canada’s Junior Worlds Pair. Four of our junior athletes were selected to row the following day in the Canada Cup Regatta. Phil K was the stroke seat of Alberta/Saskatchewan composite 8 that came third in the Senior Men’s 8+. They were only a few seconds behind Team BC’s eight which had Brentwood alumni Ben Coull & Martin Barakso, sitting together in six and seven seat. Kate LW was also in the Team BC Under 21 Women’s quad and they came home with the silver. Meanwhile, Lion and Peter were taken out of the sweep pool and dropped into Team BC’s Under 21 Men’s quad that was being coached by Brentwood’s Mrs. Amiel. The Team BC quad beat a heavily favored Team Ontario quad that contained the top three junior scullers in the country and took the coveted Canada Cup Gold medal. It was a fantastic trip and we would like to thank Team BC, Rowing Canada, and the school for the opportunity to participate and compete these past four days. Joe M, Ellis ’17
