A Blast from the Past – Mack Open House

Bright twinkle lights and the sound of music led a menagerie of Brentwood students dressed in colourful leg-warmers, jean or leather jackets, and retro headbands to the doors of Mackenzie House on Saturday night. Once inside, they didn’t appear nearly as out-of-place in clothes from the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, especially if they found their way to the floor to match their costumes! The time machine (also known as a foyer) worked overtime that night, transporting students back in time to any of the four featured decades, one on each of Mack House’s four storeys. Each themed floor sported décor and music from the decade, adding to the ‘back in time’ aura. The one time each year when all doors are open, the much-anticipated open house gives the girls the opportunity to show off their rooms, hang out with friends, dance, get photos taken at the themed photo booth, and – of course – eat pizza! Everyone dressed to the nines in their best retro clothing and, in the end, it was decided that a cheetah hat and coat would win the prize for the best costume of the night. As if there weren’t already enough exciting elements to this year’s open house, we even got our own Snapchat geotag: a photo filter accessible only in Mack House! This is the first time there has been a geotag for an open house at Brentwood, so it afforded much excitement to Mack girls and others alike. Bittersweet for the Grade 12s, as it is their last opportunity to take part in the tradition of inviting everyone over for the evening, Mack’s Decade-themed Open House was certainly a blast from the past.
