Ashley Armstrong, an Olympic nutritionist, came to Brentwood on Tuesday, November 29th to speak to our student about nutrition issues specific to athletes. Ashley has worked with Canada’s national triathlon, men’s rugby 7’s, diving, rowing and cycling programs. She works closely with coaches and athletes to provide the best nutrition plan to help enhance performance. The focus of this presentation was performance preparation and supplementation. Ashley and the students interacted together to talk about the risk of taking supplements and how there are better alternatives. “I learned that there’s more to nutrition than pre-workout and caffeine" observed Jacob P, Whittall ‘18. The event was organized by Mr. Amiel, who instructs many of the school’s top senior athletes in Varsity Training. Thirty of these athletes, including numerous rowers, attended to broaden their knowledge about nutrition. "I didn’t know echinacea could be laced with banned substances” said Danielle M, Alex 17. Danielle, a member of Brentwood’s Varsity 4+,which won CSSRA Gold last year, knows a few things about high performance. Ashley also advised the students about nutrition planning in terms of amounts of protein and carbohydrates. Many of our top athletes now have additional knowledge with which to make wise nutritional decisions. Virginia W, Mackenzie ‘18
