ShawMUN Victoria 2018

On 7am on Friday the April 6th, 49 delegates departed the gates of Brentwood. Our destination was to attend ShawMUN Victoria, located at the Victoria Conference Centre and the Legislature Building. Preliminary to this MUN, hours were spent researching and constructing position papers to state our assigned country’s stance on the issue at hand. As these buildings are situated in downtown Victoria by the waterfront, we had a beautiful location in which to spend the weekend. We started off the weekend by hearing from our keynote speaker, Elaine Gibbons, who is the Vice President for Global Engagement and Communications at PATH. PATH is a international health organization that strives to use innovation to improve the quality of life for children and women. Her presentation was factual and inspiring, and certainly set us in the mood for a weekend of hopeful solutions and set us striving for change. This MUN’s seven committees covered controversial topics including illicit organ trade, deinstitutionalizing patients, the legal status of recreational drugs, refugee crises, embedding artificial intelligence in the workforce, and even season three of Stranger Things. These are just a few of the many topics that were discussed and debated at this tournament. After examining the topic(s) in our committee, and speaking on our country’s position, the delegates collectively discussed possible solutions for these global struggles. Of course, not all of our time was spent finding solutions for these disputed topics. We attended the delegate social on the Friday night, and also had long breaks which were perfect for walks along the waterfront and time with our friends. We also met many people from other schools and made new friends and memorable connections. This day was very successful for all of the delegates.
