Student Leadership At Regatta

During the busy weekend of our International Regatta, all Brentwood students participate in various jobs to help out with the busy event. This allows for a sense of leadership and unity in the school; whether you are parking cars, handing out awards, boat washing, or taking photographs, every job has an important role in the Brentwood, and rowing, community. Every student works to help make Regatta run smoothly and easily; some students are outside, standing for up to three hours, while others are helping guests from all over the world to settle in and enjoy this event. Not only is this a way to help out the school, but it is also a way to meet new people and enjoy the different aspects of Regatta. Ms. Julie Kadar, Regatta Store Manager, said that she “love[s]” being part of Regatta, “especially when the sun is shining”. Working at the store consists of training for store management and setting up the store. Ms. Laura Richardson and the students working at the Waste Education group stated that they “Educate the people at Regatta on how to sort their waste and dispose of garbage” as well as collecting refundables. The money collected goes to BEAT projects and all of the organic compost is made into fertilizer. Other jobs that require lots of work are the on-water jobs. Examples of on-water jobs are the dock marshals, who ensure that the boat drivers are taken care of and set up the course for Regatta, as well as leading boat safety, and the boat drivers, who put in many hours and endure extreme temperatures throughout their shifts. Brentwood students and staff participating in jobs over the course of Regatta have a huge positive influence in the way this event runs.
