3D Pottery is a great opportunity that Brentwood offers as an option on an arts afternoon. Students start off by handbuilding to get the feel for the clay. Students learn to sculpt in different ways by making mugs, stamps, candle lanterns, etcetera. After learning the techniques of handbuilding, they learn about glazing. Brentwood has a wide range of glazes from neutrals to primaries giving students many options of being creative with their designs. From there, students move on to the exciting part – the wheel. Callum B, Privett ‘20 says when he first started on the wheel “The challenge of centring tranquilized my mind and emotions.” The expert instruction from Ms Elmes taught us that with patience and practice everything will work out. Each student improves with help from Ms Elmes and the amazing pottery Captains. Pottery Captain Mark W, Ellis ‘18 say “Pottery is a unique art in the sense that you can both see and feel your progress.” From throwing to trimming the Brentwood 3D pottery program is outstanding with an oceanfront view and amazing supplies. “Brentwood offers an incredible pottery program with top-of-the-line equipment, facilities, and instruction” said Mark. Potters are given different projects throughout the year which include bowls, cups, vases and more. Each project tests our skills with different sizes and shapes. Every year Brentwood puts on an amazing musical production: the pottery program designs pottery that fits the musical’s theme. This year produced Crazy For You. The Crazy For You project was “designed so that we could combine western and urban themes, just like the musical” said Mark. This let the students be creative and express their thoughts on the play. As each student moves from a beginner to an advanced potter they learn new techniques and skills that will last them a lifetime. “Pottery is a different kind of art that allows you to feel it” mused Grace M, Alex ‘20.
