Snacks, friends, and wonderfully written poetry. Is there a better way to start off our final month of school? The students who showed up for Brentwood’s second Poetry Slam of 2018 would argue probably not. This year’s Poetry Captain Ava Nilsson, Allard ’18 has taken the initiative to organize two light-hearted and judgement-free poetry events for young writers at Brentwood. Many read poems they had written, some brought favourite poems written by others, we were even lucky enough to hear Oli MB, Alexandra ’21 recite a short story. "Being able to listen to other people’s works on an emotional level as well as being involved brought me closer to my peers" said Oli. Most impressive was the raw emotion we saw in these pieces. Several students even disclosed that it wasn’t often that they felt they were able to talk about these subjects with others, but the welcoming environment truly made it easy for everyone to open up to each other. The vulnerability of getting up on stage didn’t stop any of the fantastic performers from bringing their everything. "It’s a judgement free zone," Finn B, Whittall ’18 noted, "a place where we can express our emotions and experiences with each other." The night left many who attended asking for more regular events like this throughout the year, saying that by meeting more they felt we could start to improve as a group. Events that allow Brentwood students to come together in this way and make them feel as if they are sharing something they’re all passionate about are truly something special.
