Rowing: Mary Johnston and Claire Rawlinson win the prestigious Alan Roaf Trophy at the Hungerford Regatta

The Rowing Club travelled to Shawnigan lake School this past weekend to compete in the Hungerford Regatta on the Saturday and the Head of the Shawnigan Lake on Sunday. The Hungerford Regatta is a 1000 m sprint regatta in small boats and the Head of the Shawnigan Lake a 6 km head race using the entire length of the lake. On Saturday, Mary Johnston and Claire Rawlinson overcame some interesting steering challenges posed by other crews in the race to win the prestigious Alan Roaf Trophy in the Jr. ‘A’ pairs. Brooke Huestis and Rona Mitchell were second in this event. Quinn Erickson raced in the “A” final in the Open Single and finished third. Adelaide Backer and Deidre Huestis came from behind to narrowly win over the 2007 National Jr. ‘B’ bronze medalists Stephanie Ridenour and Megan Griffiths in the Jr. ‘B’ double. Our Jr. ‘B’ boys coxed quad led by Dan Robinson led from start to finish to win the event. Colin Gilbert and Steve Schultz won the “B” final in the men’s pair event. On Sunday, both the girls Jr. ‘B’ double and quad won 1st-place ribbons. The boys varsity eight, the boys Jr. ‘B’ eight and our tenacious Jr. ‘C’ quad finished second, and the girls varsity eight and girls Jr. ‘B’ eight both finished third. Overall, the club had some very good results and it was a great way to start the 2008 racing campaign. The next event will be in two weeks at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta on the March 1st and 2nd weekend.
