Brentwood Hockey vs Cowichan & Prince of Wales

The week before Winter Break was a busy one for the Brentwood Varsity Hockey team. We played two games and then assisted in running a program-wide 3 on 3 tournament. Thursday’s league game was the second one for Brentwood as we faced off against a hot Cowichan Secondary School team. Brentwood was ready to play and motivated after a huge upset tilt against Shawnigan the week before. The scoring opened quickly as Haden U, Ellis ‘19 potted a one-timer on a pass from Blake C, Privett ‘19. The team continued to rally as Haden scored top shelf on a great steal and breakaway pass by Kirtis H, Privett ‘19. Cowichan then scored just before the second-period buzzer and cut Brentwood’s lead in half. The rest of the game was a dogfight as both teams traded blows but Cowichan punched two more tallies on the scoresheet making it a 3-2 game. With less than a minute left Haden received a great breakout pass from Jack P, Whittall ‘20 and carried the puck down the wing, saucing it to the middle for a wide open Maxton A, Privett ‘19. Maxton buried it, scoring his first Brentwood goal. It was a special moment and the last minute play showed the relentless character of the team. Brentwood came close to potting a game-winning goal on the last shift, however the puck was lost in the crowd in front of the net. The game ended in a tie and although the boys were disappointed that it wasn’t a win, the team proved to be hard to play against. The message in the room after the game was that we would need to be more consistent and not allow our play and level of intensity to fluctuate like it did during the third period. Our coveted MVP hat was given to goaltender Brandon R, Rogers ‘19 after a solid performance in net. The team swiftly moved on and got some rest as they and the second team headed out for a quick trip to Vancouver on Friday. The Varsity team faced off in an exhibition game against Prince of Wales. After going down 2-0 early, the team was unable to rally back. Disappointed in the result, both coaches and players agreed that changes needed to be made. The team opted to sacrifice their sleep on Saturday for an early-morning workout in hopes of enhancing the work ethic and commitment within the team. The game’s MVP hat was handed off to defenseman Jack P, Whittall ‘20 for his outstanding work ethic and lockdown positioning on the Penalty Kill. Saturday afternoon’s 3 on 3 tournament was a chance for members of all four Brentwood teams to let loose before the holidays and have fun with friends. Teams were composed of all levels of skill making it an interactive, fun, and diverse experience.
