Athletics Review – September 2019

4 October 2019Blake Gage - Director of Athletics

Welcome back Brentwood family and friends! We are looking forward to another active and exciting year in Brentwood Athletics.  It has been a busy start to the year and our students appear keen and eager to engage in their sports. It is wonderful to see the fields, gym, weight rooms, tennis courts and waterfront alive with activity once again. This term, while there are a variety of athletic options offered, we strongly encourage everyone to try and engage in a team sport; there is no better way to get to know your peers than to work with them in practice and then compete together in games. These shared experiences bring our kids that much closer together and create memories that last a lifetime. In our first term, it is the competitive season for:

Grade 9 Boys Rugby

Junior Boys Soccer

Senior Boys Soccer

Senior Girls Volleyball

Junior Girls Volleyball

Senior Girls Field Hockey

Junior Girls Field Hockey

Cross Country Running

Our kids love playing on these teams; the coaching they receive is first rate and it all starts with the underlying belief that kids need to have fun. Our first few weekends of action was highlighted by our Field Hockey teams competing in the 2019 Friendship Cup, our Senior Girls Volleyball team competing at the UBC Invitational, while our Senior Boys and Junior Soccer teams competed at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Championship hosted by St. George’s School. All the teams impressed playing against excellent competition but the highlight of the year to date was definitely both the Senior and Junior Boys Soccer teams capturing gold at their ISA tournaments. Winning these events is quite an accomplishment and the boys did it in impressive fashion. The Senior Boys had a goals for and against of 12-3.   Meanwhile, the Grade 9 Rugby boys have been busy with scrimmages vs St Michaels and our Cross Country team is set to engage in a couple of local meets next week.  Finally, if you are looking for a true West Coast experience, our Outdoor Pursuits class can tell you all about their exciting five day circumnavigation of Salt Spring Island. The students returned wet but exhilarated from their trip this past Sunday. It has definitely been a great start to the year and we look forward to lots more action as we head into a busy October.
