Meta 9 Master Chef
On Saturday, April 4th the Grade 9 cohort participated in another design sprint via Zoom! This time students were tasked with an exciting cooking challenge to see who could create a healthy dish with only seven ingredients in a one-hour time frame.
Before students started cooking away, their group leader presented them with the idea of healthy eating. The teachers talked about why nutrition is especially important during times like these and how the right nutrition will affect our mental health and immune system in a positive manner. Then, Chef Morgan came in and introduced us to what composes a healthy dish. He talked about “having a colourful plate with half of your plate being fruit and veggies”. The students also discussed the different food safety challenges due to Covid-19 and how creativity can help us with our food choices.
After that, the troops went off to make a meal that checked the criteria set out by Chef Morgan. Their dishes would be judged on nutritional content, presentation, timeliness, and ingenuity.
After an hour students came back to present their seven-ingredient master dishes that took the leaders by surprise! We had multiple students make “elevated” avocado toast, others made noodles, power bowls, and we even had students like Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 cook their families a full meal!
“I wasn’t sure what to make at first, but then I found some leftovers in the fridge, added some veggies and turned it into a more nutritious meal,” said Will C, Rogers ‘23. It was great to see our Meta 9 students from all over the world participate in the challenge. Even with the difficulty of time zones, some students managed to make midnight snacks! Group leaders like Ms Manton also decided to take part in the challenge and make their version of a healthy meal.
It is fantastic to see our Brentwood community stay connected through these times and make the most out of the situation! Special thanks to the Meta 9 teachers, Ms Murray, Chef Morgan and the group leaders for putting this challenge together.
