Photo Day – They Only See The Top Half

One thing many students regret from last year’s COVID-19 complications is that we never got to see our formal yearbook photos. I accompanied some of the others in Privett House as they flipped through some of the older yearbooks this morning, reminiscing over fond memories of friends and colleagues. Some of the boys were extremely humored by their own pictures, either claiming that they look younger than they thought or that they simply disliked the picture.

The vast majority of students seem indifferent about Picture Day at Brentwood, but some choose to make it interesting. A few kids every year bring up the point that the photo is only of your upper torso and head, and not of the lower half of your body. This fact results in there being a variety of clothing articles that in no way match the formal uniform used in the photos.

“Well, the photo is only of the upper half,” commented Mr. Neufeld as the Privett boys hustled towards the Foote Center, “so there is no reason for them to wear anything formal” below the belt. Watching a horde of giddy boys walk out onto the hazy field in sandals, rugby shorts, and sweatpants on their way to the Foote Center is quite the sight.

More than a few students take the opportunity to show off the pins they have been awarded over the year for their accomplishments. I, for one, am very proud of the one pin that was so graciously bestowed to me and will wear it on my blazer every chance I get. As some students flaunt their lapel trophies, others have not a single piece of the Brentwood uniform to wear, as they are either new this year or have grown out of their old clothing.

The plan is to have a re-take opportunity later in the year once more students have settled in, but we learned from last year that some students need to have their photos taken very early on in the year. “Yearbook is very happy to have these photos done early in the year. That way we can begin the mugshot layouts and use the photos to identify students quickly and caption photos" said Yearbook Editor Mr. Ganley.

Hopefully, all goes smoothly in the next few weeks and we have the chance to return to a more normalized schedule.
