How Did We Get Here So Fast?

How Did We Get Here So Fast?

Last Saturday’s House photos planted a seed in my mind; it brought the realization from my subconscious to my conscious: how did we get to our grad year so unbelievably fast? From our first Grade 9 day in Whittall, to our first day on duty, our lifers have been incredibly close from the start.

During my first day in Whittall House I was warmly greeted by a friendly looking baby face, which did not seem to match the maturity of the Whittall 2016 House Captain, Will Hardy. He taught me many things about leadership, and how to make myself a part of the house – to be a memorable day student. During our first house meeting with all the new students, Will gave us a message that has stuck with me: “Get involved! The more you invest yourself into Brentwood, the more knowledge and experiences you will take with you when you graduate. And trust me when I say graduation will come sooner than you could ever imagine.”

“No matter how you are connected to Brentwood, it is always a brain-breaking moment when you take a step back, and realize how quickly we have all grown up” said Tony E, Whittall ‘21. It felt surreal looking at Ryangwon K, Whittall ‘21 and no longer seeing that small, quiet, child I bonded with during my first year. He is now a more outgoing young man whom I still look to for peer tutoring. Or Jahmaal K, who looks like a giant standing next to me – I swear I was taller than him at some point.

My close friend and fellow lifer observed that “Growing up in Whittall has been an amazing experience, and it’s been cool seeing all of my friends grow up with me. Seeing how they’ve matured has been very rewarding and I am thrilled to see what everyone does post secondary” added Ryangwon. I believe this is how most of us are feeling as we approach graduation. Time flies by when you’re having fun, so it’s possible to say that Brentwood – and Whittall – has been some of the funnest years of our lives.
