Ms Hampton – A Physics Expert

Ms Hampton, as our Wednesday night duty staff and my physics teacher, is a fundamental part of Mackenzie House. She began working at Brentwood as a full-time Grade 10 science and physics teacher in September 2020. She now also works in the Learning Centre. While describing her love for the school, she mentioned her fondness for “the aspect of community and the family atmosphere within the school.”

Growing up in Calgary, she participated in dance, softball, and competitive marching band for six years. On completing high school, she went to the University of Calgary where she studied engineering for a year until she “flunked out.” This was an important part of growing up as it taught her that “Messing up once isn’t the end of the world” which proved her resilience.

After taking a year off to work, she went back to school to begin her degree in mathematics at Mount Royal. After her first year, she transferred to the University of Victoria where she completed her degree in physics and then her Bachelor of Education. After completing her schooling, she moved back to Calgary to pursue her career in teaching in a variety of situations including time in England.

In between her physics and education degrees, she did a six-week service trip to the Dominican Republic where she built a sidewalk and helped to run an educational summer camp in a small community outside of Cabarete. This experience left her with new life lessons and many new values. Ms Hampton expressed that “I learned the significance of service and giving back to the community, in addition, compassion and courtesy, while learning always to accept others as you never know what they are going through.”

To close, Ms Hampton would like to leave everyone with a piece of advice: “It’s okay to make mistakes, try new things, fail and succeed. Each experience leads to more knowledge and new accomplishments.”
