Get Those Gains: The Strength & Conditioning Room

The Brentwood lifestyle ensures that students are on the go all the time, filling their schedules with academics, arts, athletics, and extracurricular programs. We wouldn’t want it any other way, but it does mean that the free time we do receive is cherished all the more, and for many, that sacred free time is spent in a sacred space: the strength & conditioning room.

From 2:00-6:00 pm on arts days, 6:00-7:00 pm on sports days, and 1:00-3:00 pm on Sundays, the strength & conditioning room is available to all students who want to put in that work. Whether they are on a personal journey, training for a sport, or just want a place to keep their fitness up, students will find everything they could possibly ask for in a gym at the S&C room. The state-of-the-art facility is complete with eight squat racks and benches, various cable machines, an immense collection of dumbbells and barbells, and so much more.

Of course, managing COVID guidelines has been an important part of using the S&C room this year, with all gymgoers having to be masked up at all times, staying in their learning groups, and sanitizing equipment after use. Cam M, Whittall ‘22, is more than happy to follow the guidelines if it means getting to work out: “It takes a couple of extra minutes making sure everything is sanitized and keeping socially distanced, but it is definitely worth being able to use the gym and all it has to offer.”

Along with the incredible equipment is a group of certified trainers who are willing and able to help any student with building a program, perfecting form, or even identifying injuries. This group includes Mr David Cowie, Mr Thompson, Mr Amiel, and Ms Scheck. Although they may look intimidating, each coach is very friendly and always available to help students with whatever they require.

Few students are in the gym more than certified muscle man Tareq A, Whittall ‘21, and he appreciates more than most how valuable working out can be: “The gym is more than just about pumping iron; it’s a valuable hobby that strengthens the body and the mind, and also builds discipline, and the S&C room has everything you need to achieve those goals.”

Over the course of the year, the S&C room has been a crucial part of many students’ lives, serving as an outlet for physical and personal wellness that can only be achieved through physical exercise. We are truly lucky to be able to get to use such an incredible space and we make sure not to take it for granted.
