Senior Camp In

A traditional event that seniors at Brentwood look forward to every year is the iconic “Camp Out.” Usually, the Grade 12s take tents somewhere off-campus where they spend the night enjoying an outdoorsy setting. Unfortunately, this year’s “Camp Out” was, for Covid safety reasons, replaced with a “Camp In,” and we were offered the opportunity to sleep in the fantastic Foote Center for a night.

Although not as remarkable as the idea of spending a night somewhere new, the evening was filled with fun and laughter. Chaperoned thoroughly by Mr Sullivan, the hours of 11:00 pm to 7:00 am were amusing, albeit safe and responsible. In the cautioning words of Mr Sullivan to the atendees: “This is not a night to do something stupid. You may end up graduating alone; we’ll send you your diploma in the mail.” Although stern, his attitude during our briefing was clear in that the “Camp In” was a privilege, and I believe that his strictness resulted in an equilibrium between safety and entertainment.

The night started with a massive game of dodgeball, involving two teams which were more focused on having a great time than taking the game very seriously. A couple of variations of dodgeball were played, including a more competitive free-for-all version, and subsequently, the doors of the gym were opened so that we could cool down and get some air. Then the seniors played a game of hide-and-seek, which was a quick one given the minimalistic design of the building.

After a couple of hours of less physical activities and an offering of food and drinks, the 2:00 am curfew arrived and the different houses were separated. With the girls in the basketball gym and the boys in different multi-purpose rooms, the Foote was relatively quiet until sunrise. As the Privett Grade 12s woke almost simultaneously, a few half-asleep boys remarked, “Oh God, now I’ve got to carry my mattress back,” and I must say I felt more sorry for the Hope girls, who live on the opposite side of campus.

The senior “Camp-In” was a delightful experience, and although I hope it never has to be substituted for the usual, non-Covid wary equivalent, I am happy we had the opportunity to simulate a regular year. Thanks to Mr Sullivan and the student leaders who arranged this event.
