Impeccable, Spectacular Football in Action

Competitive first term sports at Brentwood come fast and furious for everyone, but this year ISAs came at Nitro speed for our Senior Boys Soccer team.

As most students were making their way down to Crooks Hall in their Pyjamas and slippers, half-awake, dreading first block, the best of the best loaded their cleats and paraphernalia onto a bus at 7:30 am and began their trek down to St Michaels University School (SMUS) in Victoria. Excitement was high, but the bus was quiet – sort of in the ‘Yay I’m on vacation, but the time difference is really getting to me’ kind of way – as Avik B, Privett ‘23 and his fluffy friend Stitch napped, visualized, and prepared for their matches to come.

Brakes screeched as the Brentwood bus rumbled onto the SMUS campus. The bus door opened, as did the imaginations of these young men. Early fall sun sprinkled across the SMUS field. ISA schools from across the province showed up ready to play, including SMUS, Shawnigan, St. Georges, GNS, and Collingwood.

Smelly cleats, muddy socks and bright smiles are how you could identify the Brentwood squad after their first triumph of the tournament over GNS, 2-1. “Two absolute bangers” observed Oscar L, Ellis ‘23 from Obase A and Youki I set Brentwood off in the right direction for the rest of the tournament. The second match of the day was an aggressive and physical battle against the St. George’s B team. Goals scored by Youki I and Anton S got Brentwood right where they wanted for the kickoff the next day against Collingwood.

Once again, early Saturday morning, the boys gathered together, breakfast in hand, and trudged onto the bus one more time only to hope that the next time they stepped foot on that bus they would have an ISA Champion trophy in their hands.

According to the boys, a pre-game Facetime call from last year’s Head Prefect, Jack NG and a few “very motivational words” (Davis P, Whittall ‘23) was all it took to vault the boys towards a convincing 3-0 win over St. George’s ‘A’ team to bring home gold.

The school could not be prouder of the grit and joy shown by this young group of footballers. Unofficially, the team awarded MVP honours to Yuto I, Whittall ‘25 who sat, trophy in hand, grinning the whole ride home.
