A Slippery Affair

Since the start of the year, brother-sister houses Whittall and Alex have had their fair share of bonding exercises. And to continue the tradition, bonding stretched beyond campus. Just a short bus ride away, the two houses found themselves at the local skating rink, Kerry Park.

By the time the boys arrived at the rink, the girls were already on the ice. Excited to join in, we all rushed to grab a pair of skates. With skates in hand, everyone found a spot to sit and the battle between our feet and the skates began. Some surrendered and sought out a different size while other more worthy skaters overcame their hardships and squeezed into the somewhat uncomfy and smelly rentals.

Then came the greatest struggle: tying the skates. The foreign footwear offered a whole new challenge. How to tie shoelaces – something Brentwood’s tripartite program had fallen short on. Thankfully hockey guys like Will P, Whittall ‘22 came to the rescue and, not long afterwards, everyone was on the ice.

The rink was chaotic.

While some had years of practice, others were stepping onto ice for the first time. This was quickly resolved with everyone rushing to offer assistance to those yet-to-master-skating novices. “It was great to see the boys and girls come together and help each other. That’s what all these events are really about,” stated Whittall House Captain, Cameron M.

The night was a blast. While some mindlessly skated in circles, others showed off their repertoire, like NHL prospect Owen S, Whittall ‘22, who was sure to make all the girls’ jaws drop. “The skate was the perfect opportunity for us as a house to get closer to the guys in Whittall. And although others and I ended the night with a couple of bruises, we all had so much fun,” said Alex House Captain, Justine C, Alex ‘22.

To end off the skate, donuts had been supplied courtesy of Alex House. And to end off the night full of laughs, Alex was invited to Whittall House where a mountain of pizza awaited them.

Thanks to Ms Rogers, Ms Hall, Mrs Warner (the mastermind behind it all), the transportation staff, the rink staff, and anyone else involved in helping make such a memorable,Canadian event – skating on a February Saturday night.
