“Fun in the Sun” or “Take Cover from the Drizzle”

The annual spring fun fair, “Fun in the Sun” was renamed “Take Cover from the Drizzle” this year with Vancouver Island living up to its reputation of being in a rainforest. In fact, southern British Columbia broke an 80 year record this spring – for low temperatures. Almost a week into June, thick grey clouds still ominously hung over the Brentwood Campus spewing rain whenever they felt like it. Although not ideal, the cool weather did not hinder Brentwood’s ability to have fun and celebrate the eventual arrival of summer.

The Fun Fair usually takes place outside on Campbell Commons, but this year, due to the rainy weather, the event was moved inside of McNeill’s to shelter from the rain. There was an absence of sun, but there was undoubtedly no absence of smiling faces and laughter that are usually associated with fairs.

The event included carnival-themed games such as partner balloon popping and an ice cream eating competition. Students were also drawn by the wide variety of temporary tattoos that were available to display all over their bodies. Some are even realistic enough to prank teachers and parents at home. Ms Ramsay thought that this tattoo parlor might have been “hands down the most popular event that SAC has ever had”.

After working up an appetite from experimenting with various carnival games, students headed next door to Crooks Hall where they were served a buffet style fair-themed dinner. This included two salad options, taquitos, corn dogs, onion rings, sliders, and iced tea as well as Haagen Dazs ice cream bars for dessert.

This large meal was suitably filling as it prepared Brentwood’s top athlete’s for a competitive Interhouse Spikeball tournament. The rain did not stop the athletes from spiking full on and the competition on the turf was tough. Katie L, ‘24 was a competitor for the Mack House juniors and commented that “Interhouse Spikeball was intense, competitive, and, despite the rainy conditions, enthusiastic.”

Given that this was the last major school-wide event that the SAC will organize this year, Ms Ramsay – who works tirelessly to plan and run amazing events for the students – was optimistic to make the Fun Fair as exciting as possible.

A big shout out to all of the students who made “Take Cover from the Drizzle” such a fun and lively event despite the unfortunate weather conditions. The SAC worked tirelessly to organize amazing events all year and they did not disappoint with the final event of the year. The enthusiastic participation of the student body, making this year a fun one, would not have been possible without the dedication of Anna D, Allard ‘22, Captain of the SAC, and Ms Ramsay, the staff sponsor of this club.
