Interhouse Spirit

From the fiery red and purple of Alex-Whittall to the blazing orange and teal of Allard-Rogers, Brentwood’s Interhouse events always light up a flame of passion shown in the roaring crowds dressed in their house colours and accompanied by a mascot.

When one comes to Brentwood, you are not only joining the Brentwood family, but also your more intimate family, the Houses. Being a part of a House grows strong relationships as 60 ‘siblings’ grow together throughout the years.

Striving to be Interhouse Champion at the end of the school year, each competitive house pairing participates in a variety of competitions to earn Interhouse points throughout the year. Interhouse Co-Captain Debbie Z, Alex ‘23 enthused: “I love seeing everybody going out to support each other and showing our house spirit.” With Alex-Whittall dominating in Interhouse Basketball and Eco-Challenge, they quickly claimed the current #1 spot on the podium, with Hope-Privett following only seven points behind.

Interhouse competitions come with passion, grit, and, of course, rivalry. “I think the competitiveness between the houses is the best part of Interhouse because it is so energizing” Novella R, Hope ‘25 exclaims. “It brings together people to compete on teams against other houses, allowing you to meet new people.” The house spirit can be seen all over campus with students and house staff proudly wearing their house hoodies or t-shirts.

These events are no small thing, with the whole house coming out to cheer on the competing players in their bright colours. Sienna G, Alex ‘25 remarks, “People get really hyped up for Interhouse. There is always a huge crowd of people in their house colours.” These events are an exciting way for everyone to have an opportunity to show off their skills, whether that is basketball, kayaking, debate or volleyball. With a mutual goal for the trophy, brother-sister houses work together to fight for the glory.

If you are reading this as a future Brentwood student, try to find out your house colour before coming so you can bring some house-coloured clothing with you. Trust me you’ll be wearing it a lot! And if you happen to not have any, remember you always have a house of friends to borrow from!
