Climbing Rocks … Rocks!
One of Brentwood’s unique features is its Olympic-size, eight course climbing facility. Located in our recently constructed Foote Athletic Centre, the wall is home to many passionate climbers on campus.
Climbing is offered as both a sport and a recreational activity at Brentwood. As a sport, Brentonians are exposed to a range of climbing styles, from bouldering to speed climbing to lead climbing. “I joined third term climbing and instantly fell in love” said Francois D, Rogers ‘23. “It’s the perfect combination of fun and athleticism and finally completing a route after hours of practice is super rewarding.”
Aside from sports afternoons 2-6pm, climbing is offered Mondays 3-5pm and Sundays from 11-1. “Climbing is an excellent full body workout. Our group of climbers at Brentwood is very welcoming to any newcomers, and it’s really easy to get started” explains Ms West, one of the climbing coaches and supervisors of the wall. Students do not have to be in sport climbing to come into the sessions on Mondays and Sundays. They are open to all!
Recently, one of Brentwood’s best climbers earned the opportunity to compete in the climbing provincials hosted a few weeks back in Vancouver. Emiliano A, Rogers ‘23, speaks on his experience: “BC’s climbing provincials are some of the most competitive North America has to offer. It was really cool to compete next to all these other amazing climbers I’ve heard of from around the province.” Emiliano finished with a spectacular 9th place in the junior category and 11th overall.
A special thank you to Ms Curtis, Ms West, Ms Miller, Mr Hepburn and Ms Wagstaff, who all coach climbing and supervise the wall, keeping the sport open and accessible throughout the year. Anyone with spare time looking for some fun and fitness should definitely come give it a try!
