Mind, Body, Brentwood: A Recap of Mental Health Week

As the AP exam season begins and the end of the year draws near, stress levels are on the rise at Brentwood. That’s why the first week of May is dedicated to Mental Health Week, with a focus on philautia, a healthy self-love. The B-Well team, led by Captain Jenny Li and sponsored by Ms Murray, has been hard at work to make this a relaxing and successful week on campus.

The time is designed to encourage students to prioritize self-care and seek help when needed. There are a range of activities to help students de-stress, including notes of encouragement, a puppy room, silent meditation time, and a yoga session. On Friday night, there was also a talk by Brie Mathers, a well-known speaker and artist who is dedicated to empowering young people to combat bullying and build self-esteem. Her message was one of positivity and hope, reminding us that we all have the power to overcome our obstacles and live fulfilling lives.

“In solidarity and sisterhood, I believe we can gather our hearts together to lead a new conversation about our bodies and beings,” she adds.

"After taking my AP Literature exam on Wednesday morning, the perfect thing I needed was to be a part of a dog pile with a bunch of puppies" states Laila R, Mack ‘23.

Brentwood is also celebrating 50 Years of Women at the school this week, making Brie Mathers’ talk particularly relevant for females. Her message of building self-worth is always welcome, especially during a week centered around self-love.

"The activities and events that B-Well has put together are so valuable, and I feel grateful to be a part of a school that prioritizes mental health in this way," says B-Well Captain Jenny L, Alex ‘23.

We hope that Mental Health Week has inspired everyone to continue prioritizing self-care and seeking help when needed, not just this week but throughout the rest of the year.
