Rogers-Allard is Bouncing Back!

With Air Band right around the corner, our plates here at Brentwood are pretty full with Interhouse competitions. But amidst the choreography and music resonating from the Foote Multi-Purpose rooms, you can hear the bounce of basketballs. Interhouse Basketball is back! And with this being one of the biggest sport-related Interhouse Competition events, every house is looking for first place.

Now, if you are a parent or other non-student Brentwood community member, you may be confused as to why the stakes are so high for the title of Interhouse Champion. For this, you are going to need a bit of Interhouse history.

Years ago, Mackenzie and Ellis House had an Interhouse streak going—five years in a row they won. But then in the 2020/21 school year, Hope/Privett broke that streak in an unprecedented win: “I was in Grade 9 when we broke the streak. It was crazy. No one thought it would happen,” exclaimed Maggie Z (Hope ‘24). Their win was propelled forward by the support from the other two houses, Alex/Whittall and Allard/Rogers. Riding the high of that win, Hope/Privett won again in 2021/22. Moving into the 2022/23 school year, Hope/Privett were looking for a ‘threepeat’, hoping to break the quinquennial record, but alas, Alex/Whittall came in with an out-of-nowhere win.

If you notice that Allard/Rogers is not mentioned in the above paragraph, you would be right. Allard/Rogers has not taken an Interhouse Competition title in forever, which is why they are so determined to win this year. All of the houses have personal stakes in the contest, which makes the competitive nature of these events so much higher.

Students filled the gym last Saturday, decked out in their house colours. The pressure was high to secure points before Air Band. There were battles out on the court, all teams wanting to make it to the final. But in the end, it came down to Ellis vs Privett for Senior Boys and Allard vs Hope for Senior Girls. Ellis prevailed against Privett in a tense final, the match getting a little scrappy, each team really fighting for each point. Hope “gave it their all” promised Tatum L (Hope ‘24), but the Hopelings came up short, and, considering that Allard has several of the starting five for the Girls Basketball Team, it’s not surprising. This is a huge win for Allard/Rogers as they are starting the year off strong. And maybe, just maybe, this will be a winning year for Allard/Rogers.
