Adored Arts Afternoons

With first term drawing to a close, the weather around campus is as expected for Vancouver Island: windy and rainy. While the weather may make things difficult for our outdoor athletes – soccer, rugby & cross country – our artists are flourishing indoors.

When you walk around campus on any given Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, you are likely to find our students participating in our many arts programs. When you think of art, you probably think of the 2D ones, like painting and drawing, or if you are thinking outside the box, you’d think of the 3D arts – pottery and woodworking – but Arts at Brentwood is more of an umbrella term. With some notable less art-ish programs like robotics, debate, and public speaking being some of the highest in demand.

All visual arts programs are currently finishing up projects for the Art Show. This annual event showcases some of the student’s art in an open gallery show and is one of my favourite events of the year. Bumping into Mr Luna – the Drawing and Painting teacher – in the midst of his run to the caf for more tea, he said that the art show is “shaping up to be one of the best” – and we would expect nothing less in our centenary year.

There is a lot to look forward to in the performing arts realm as well. With A Concert for a Winter’s Eve coming in December, students are already rehearsing for the coveted event where acts range from vocalists to string quartets. It never fails to amaze me the talent we have at Brentwood, Summer and Winter Eve concerts are some of my favourites for that reason. Gillian D, Hope ‘24, our Arts Prefect is one of the performers for the concert and she has assured me that this concert is “one for the books”.

No matter where you look, there’s always some fun to have or something to look forward to in the Brentwood Arts program. Nor would they function without our amazing teachers who inspire and direct our future artists. So to all of them, thank you.
