We’re jammin’, jammin’. And I hope you like jammin’, too.

What did you have for breakfast today? Did you have Nutella on toast? Maybe you indulged in some Frosted Flakes or Froot Loops? Or you may have treated yourself to a limited edition frosted pumpkin pie Pop Tart.

In a world where groceries can be delivered to your house with the click of a button, how often do we take the time to look at the ingredients we are putting into our bodies before consuming foods?

Last week, Brentwood’s Environmental Advocacy team – and some of our BEAT siblings – knew exactly what they were ingesting when the class participated in the jam-making process!

Delicious fruits we had pruned and picked on campus were crushed with love, stirred with passion, and processed with a hand blender to make the most mouth-watering homemade condiment.

For a majority of the Environmental Advocacy students, this was their first experience navigating the intricacies of jam-making.  We were guided under the wise eyes of Ms Cindy Lehman, fondly described as “A passionate jammer who makes hundreds of jars each fall for her family”, according to Mr Ganley.

The students made over two dozen warm and ready-to-eat jars of fresh, nourishing, additive-free jams.

“It was a great experience, I thought Ms. Cindy did a great job at teaching us the entire process and was really helpful when we asked for help!” exclaimed Isha C-S, Mack ‘24.

“I’ve never made Jam before, so it was really fun! I didn’t realise how intricate the process would be!” Stated Hana R, Mack ‘24.

The jam project was a great success for the Environmental Advocacy class; not only were new skills learnt, but a lot of fun was had!

Sweet!
