Black History Month

The poem below was recited at Assembly this morning in celebration of Black History Month.

February is for Black History
A time where we celebrate
Both You and Me
And all of those that came before us
And all of those that let us be free

Black History is about strength,
For we do not rest in peace
We rest in power
And there was honour in their struggle
And there was dignity in their fight.

This month is about being Black
For we are not defined by the colour of our skin
But we define ourselves, with the colour of our skin
For it represents our culture
Our ties to the past
For Black history is about memory.

We remember the lives of Mandela, Malcolm X and ML King,
We remember the lives of Rosa, Ali and Angelou
We think about what their lives meant
And we think about our lives too,
For Black history is about reflection.

The battle did not end when they stopped their fight.
The battle continues with us.
For even in Brentwood, try as we might
Some things remain unjust.
And we have a duty, a responsibility to take the torch
But to remember what makes us unique.

Dave said it best when he wrote black is beautiful
For Black History is about beauty.
It’s about art and personality
And the things that make us different.
For February is all about difference

February is for Black History.
