Pick, Cross-Country, Pick!

When one thinks about the Cross-Country running team, and let’s all be honest, we probably don’t think about them enough, we probably think first about their feet. Fleet feet on hardtop, tootsies traversing trails, huffing and puffing and sweating and striving.

But yesterday afternoon, in the warmth of the autumn sun, it was their hands that they put to use harvesting apples on Mr Smith’s property just north of the school. Apples that, if left unattended, would attract bears, rot on the lawn, and emit methane.

In the space of 30 minutes, this team denuded two apples and a pear tree – no partridge involved. They collected 230 lb of apples that will be juiced and sauced by members of the Brentwood Environmental Action Team (BEAT), and about 100 lbs of groundfall that will be fed to local chickens and livestock.
