Exploring Our World: A Day of Discovery

As fall settles around campus and Brentwood students begin to establish routines, one unique opportunity the Human and Physical Geography students get to experience is the privilege of exploring parts of beautiful Vancouver Island on which our distinctive campus lies.

The Brentwood Human and Physical Geography classes headed out to the Malahat Skywalk on October 9th to learn about the remarkable tourist attractions just 15 minutes from our campus. They were tasked with learning more about the Skywalk: why it’s there and the history behind it. Our new, insightful teacher, Ms Knorren motivated her students to “Ponder deeper, and ask more questions like why, what, and how” when thinking about the visit.

Kaitlyn T, Alexandra ‘25 adds that “The Skywalk was a beautiful place to visit with so much history within the walk.” The Malahat Skywalk was created as a sightseeing destination and a cultural attraction for Vancouver Island.

The walk is completely accessible to all and along the way there are several breathtaking pieces of art created by Malahat Indigenous artists. At the top of the Skywalk, there are numerous panels loaded with tidbits of history about the structure and the land on which it resides. Along with all the history behind the infrastructure, there are also many other attractions that appeal to all ages like “My personal favourite: the net at the top” says Jayden W, Hope ‘26: as well as a playground and many other games at the bottom.

The Brentwood experience, although very rewarding, does call for us to be on campus 24-7 which can sometimes be difficult, but with opportunities to leave Mill Bay to see features unique to the Island is a liberating experience. Learning more about the world that surrounds us can pop the Brentwood Bubble, allowing us to practice more hands-on learning.

Exploring our world allows us to reach beyond what we already know, and field trips such as this one can fuel the Brentwood spirit of curiosity and passion which are fundamental values to our school.
