The Berry Exciting Adventures of Makin’ Jelly!
Cleo K, Lily A, Bernice L, Juliana V, and we (Katie J & Zoe G) took our first steps toward making a positive environmental impact on Monday afternoon by transforming locally grown apples and raspberries into fresh, homemade jelly. This project aimed to be a ton of fun while also reducing CO2 by harvesting local fruit and reusing Mason jars.
Guided by Ms Cindy Lehman, we learned each step of the jelly-making process, using freshly juiced raspberries, apple juice from fruit harvested by BEAT & Meta 9 from the school orchard, sugar, and Certo jelly mix. A helpful tip from Cindy was to listen for the satisfying “Pop, pop, pop!” sound of the jars sealing after boiling – a sure sign of a perfectly preserved jelly.
All of us had a fantastic time. Bernice, reflecting on her experience, said, “I had an amazing time learning how to make delicious jelly while listening to Cindy’s rockin’ tunes.” Cindy’s dedication and enthusiasm created an experience that combined environmental awareness, learning, joy, and a sweet-smelling kitchen, as well as teaching us how to make delicious jelly while being mindful of our environmental footprint.
The workshop was made possible thanks to Cindy and the supportive Brentwood Food Services Team – Thanks Mr Sanderson – Mr Ganley & BEAT. We are grateful for their support.
