Unleashing Creativity: The Art Foundation Experience

While the year ramps up in academic and athletic endeavors, art afternoons offer a great escape from the fast-paced life of Brentwood.

Art Foundations is one of the many amazing art classes students can choose. With many offerings such as drawing, painting, sketching, and carving, this class allows us to express ourselves in many different media. The course welcomes both experienced artists and ones just beginning their journey as it balances learning foundational skills while simultaneously granting freedom to express personal growth.

Piangtur T, Mackenzie ‘25 and Arts Foundations Captain describes this course as “unique” and shares that amazing students can “aim to explore other means of art and challenge each student’s comfort zone”.

While the class has experimented with many projects, they are currently working on the art form of typography. Students have been challenged to produce a phrase that means something to them and display it in various ways using colour, placement, and lettering. Basma J, Allard House Captain ‘25 and Arts Foundations student, shares: “I am loving that through the use of words, we have learned to be creative in different ways”.

The teacher, Ms Ivana Cappelletto has recently joined the Brentwood staff and has been welcomed with open arms to the art community. Ms Cappelletto’s goal for her students, as she always says, is for them to “work towards artistic freedom”. To do so, she has been working hard to develop their art vocabulary and skillset. In no time, students will prepare personal projects to be shared at various art shows.

This class has been a creative outlet for many. Through diverse projects, Art Foundations continues to foster a sense of community and personal growth. Much like my peers, I am thankful for the immersive experience of not just Art Foundations, but all visual arts programs, as they foster a space of creativity and expression.
