#FitFam Takes on Third Term

As the third term sun begins to glisten across campus, the first Tuesday of April marks the start of spring sports. Some of those whose sports got left behind in the fall and winter terms find their way to an ecstatic Mr Langer, who has been restlesly awaiting this day as he attempts to craft the perfect playlist.

No, Fitness Performance is not considered a competitive sport in the Brentwood curriculum, but as the massive garage doors open to the newness of spring, releasing all of the stuffy winter air, a wave of excitement fills the Foote Center. In an environment where the workouts are intense and require grit, students quickly realize that they aren’t in it alone as they begin to form friendships through blood, sweat, toil and tears. Each session allows students to be pushed further and further as they train towards their fitness goals. Rose P Mack, ‘25, a regular in the Fitness Performance gym, comments: “I hate the pain I have to endure throughout this intense class, but after, I feel so good because I worked so hard.”

The regular fitness testing allows Brentwood students to keep track of their progress as they are tested on a spectrum of skills. Like blacksmiths forging steel, each test is an opportunity to temper their strength and resilience. Even with twenty teenagers occassionally complaining to the coaches, the energy remains high. Mr Langer, often stresses that “Attitude is everything when it comes to achieving success in Fitness Performance. While social media often touts that showing up is 80% of the battle, the reality is that a positive mindset, a determined attitude, and a strong work ethic are essential for feeling healthy, achieving results, and progressing toward your fitness goals.”

His tough-love approach encourages students to push their limits whether they want to or not. “In the Pump Factory, we embrace two powerful mantras: #NoWhiningZone and #FitFam” Mr. Langer exclaims, stressing the importance of his high-intensity workouts.

Although this term is just getting started, the class is not taking their foot of the gas in the Foote, working harder and harder each session. Students are striving to be the best versions of themselves with the help of this class. The short, intense workouts have fostered an environment where kids choose to be every sports day.

Fostering personal and physical growth through hard work, support, and encouragement allows fitness performance to be a top choice for students at Brentwood as the year wraps up.
