One eco-focussed service day opportunity

Brentwood Service Day is not only a wonderful opportunity to help our community but also a fantastic chance for many of us to support the environment – an opportunity that BEAT fully embraced on Saturday.

A dedicated group of six students, led by Mr. Roeth, completed one such environmental service activity. The worksite was conveniently located in the school orchard within walking distance from the school, adding to the environmental benefits of this activity.

Upon arrival, the team set up garden beds, beginning by laying cardboard on the grassy bottom of the beds, which is a biodegradable alternative to plastic, to prevent weed growth. After that, the team filled each bed with soil and planted potatoes in one of them, reserving the other for another plant later.

Next, we focused on pulling invasive plant species from nearby trees in the forest. Using saws and clippers, we cut a ring through the ivy surrounding each indigenous tree, ensuring not to harm the trees. Our goal was for the ivy to die and detach from the trees once it lost its connection to the ground.

These efforts benefited not only our community but also the environment by reducing carbon emissions through walking and planting local food, while helping native species flourish by eliminating invasive threats.

“It was a great group of students and a beautiful day. Because the group was very motivated, we were done after two hours.” observed Mr Roeth.
