On a beautiful spring morning last Saturday, Mr Hacker Teper and his team of students voyaged to Somenos Marsh to give back to our Cowichan Valley community. There we met Brentwood photography teacher and founder and Executive Director of the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society, Mr Paul Fletcher. Brentonians cleaned, trimmed, rebuilt, and discovered more about the vast Somenos ecosystem while making the most of the basking sun. 

Students and staff quickly rolled up their sleeves and put their gloves on: I, alongside my friend Sahir, were chosen to build a deadwood barrier to block off the Marsh’s valuable gated spaces. Sahir remarked, “Somenos Marsh was a valuable experience – I especially enjoyed learning about new species and their names in the Coast Salish language.” 

Our experience was rewarding, to say the least – everyone had the chance to take on a variety of tasks, and learn something new along the way.  We even discovered part of the boardwalk that acknowledged previous work by the Brentwood Environmental Action Team.

This year’s Service Day at Brentwood was a big win. From protecting and rebuilding ecosystems to giving back to our community, Brentonians learned how small efforts can make a big difference.
