The Finale on Gillespie: The Boys’ First XV’s Final Run at Home

It was an idyllic spring day on May 14 when the Boys’ First XV took to Gillespie Field and played what would be their final home game of the season. The stage was set, with their opponents being the Mount Doug Rams, whom the boys had beaten 52-0 just weeks before. Captain Julian B, Ellis ‘25 stated: “We knew that they were going to come out stronger this time, as it was the game that would determine which of our seasons ended here”.

The boys started with a bang, coming out of the gates with three tries in a row within 14 minutes. Scrumhalf Shunsuke N, Ellis ‘25, called plays that were setting the team up for success. Timi A-D, Rogers ‘26, Rudolph K, Rogers ‘26 and Julian made some outstanding plays that pulled them into the try-zone. Following each try, Julian went 3 for 3 on conversions, putting the boys up 21-0. Olivier B, Privett ‘25 stated: “Though we were happy with the runs we were making, we knew there was plenty of time left that could allow the Rams to get back in the game”.

The second half proved to be a challenging 30 minutes for the Brentwood squad as crucial players were taken off due to injuries. Nonetheless, the boys pulled through with a convincing win, 64-7. Their perseverance as a team showed the depth within their roster and the grit each player had. Director of Athletics, Mr Gage, stated: “While there were some bumps along the way to this win, there were also some great moments shown. Their high level of intensity and work ethic, paired with a handful of veteran Grade 12s, separates this team from just being good to being a team to watch out for across the Province”.

Congratulations to the Boys’ First XV for qualifying for the Provincial Championships in Abbotsford, May 27-30 – we will be cheering you on from home while you battle St. Michael’s for the Island Championship title next week at the University of Victoria!
