What’s New in The World of Brentwood Business?

There are numerous new developments in the world of Brentwood business, with, among other things, a significant focus on AI and data analytics. Items and market trends are coming and going – like some of our faculty here at Brentwood. In the world of the Brentwood business program, with the departure of Mr MacDonald and Mr Girard, we have gained three new teachers! 

I am pleased to introduce Ms Julie Carere: she teaches Intro to Business 11, Debate, and Economics 12. Ms Carere joins the Brentwood community from St. John’s Academy, after spending six years teaching many courses, like mathematics, marketing, entrepreneurship and, of course, economics. 

Our second new teacher is Mr Eagle Chan: he has stepped into a role within our amazing robotics program, as well as teaching Computer Science and Entrepreneurship 12! Mr Chan has lived and studied in Hong Kong, Toronto and Vancouver. He is pursuing advanced studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mr Chan also founded iSTEM AI Lab, where he leads innovative research and development in AI-enhanced STEM education. 

Lastly, another new face is Ms Layla Haslebacher: she is new to teaching Entrepreneurship 12, but we know her from her work in the Arts Program: Grade 9 arts rotation, Woodworking, and 3D Art and Sculpture. 

Brentwood has always prided itself on being a warm, inclusive, and ready-to-embrace-change community, and this year is no different. Students and staff have already shown great enthusiasm in welcoming our new teachers, creating an environment to collaborate and learn. As Ms Carere shared, “The staff and students have been very kind, cheerful, and supportive in my new role. I like that students will say, “ Hi Ms. Carere,” when passing – and that we have opportunities to connect outside of the classroom.” Whether it’s in class, other fun activities, or out walking across campus, there is always someone to connect with, even if it is your teacher that you’re dreading to see because of a late assignment.

With a funny personality and lively energy, Mr Chan knows how to make class engaging, yet also knowledgeable. His students appreciate how he blends humour with high expectations, creating a space where everyone feels comfortable participating and thinking creatively. As Luella J, Mack ‘27 says, “He somehow makes us learn business concepts while also playing some game called Gold Quest on Blooket.” Everyone is looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring, as we wrap up the Project Innovation Challenge, ready to take on what’s next. 

As the year gets underway, there’s definitely excitement within the Brentwood business community, where there is “great opportunity for my growth as an educator and leader here,” says Ms Carere, where she can also enjoy the variety of her work and the “creativity I can give in planning my lessons and courses.” With passionate new teachers, engaging projects, and an amazing learning environment, students are already diving into new ideas and great opportunities. 

New student Ruby R, Mack ‘27 shared, “I wasn’t sure what to expect coming to a new school with new teachers, but many of them, including Mr Chan, made class feel fun and welcoming from day one.” 

With students and teachers bringing their best to the classroom, it is clear that this year is going to be full of learning, supplying important ideas, and meeting the demand for great memories!
