Cowichan Haunted House: A Grad Outing

The spooky season had officially arrived, and our Grad class decided there was no better way to celebrate than with a trip to the Cowichan Haunted House. After weeks of late-night study sessions and project deadlines, we were overdue for a night of laughter, adrenaline, and a few well-earned scares. What began with a simple Grad outing quickly turned into the highlight of our first term.

From the moment the students spilled out of the buses, it was clear that this place meant serious business. Actors dressed up in costumes guided us to the line that entered the start of the haunted house. Hidden speakers whispered ominous sounds to scare us, while groups of four got a simple lecture on what we were allowed to do and what we were not allowed to do. A myriad of props, decorations covered the room, and as Lila C, Hope ‘26 announced, “I call ‘Not going first!’”

Scary characters lunged at us, lurking in shadowy corners and popping up with props as we navigated the dark and twisting hallways. Every turn brought a new surprise – flashy costumes, eerie shrieks, and sudden jump scares that made even the bravest among us leap. Despite the creepy atmosphere, laughter echoed down the corridors as each group clung to each other and hurried from room to room. Kang C, Whittall ‘26, commented on the experience, “I’d rate the haunted house a 10/10. Not for the scares, but for revealing which of my friends would betray me first in an apocalyptic scenario.

Our confident host, Ms Ramsay, took the opportunity to join a group with Zoe G, Alex ‘26 along with students from Mack to go through the haunted house. With every scare or dark turn, she could be heard making witty remarks and funny reactions, helping to turn screams of fright into peals of laughter. According to her group, she laughed: “I came ready to face ghosts, but I wasn’t ready for the screams made behind me by the girls. If anything, they scared me more!”

Our haunted house excursion set the tone: for the next 214 days, we will carry this memorable experience as one class.
