Marching To Her Own Drummer: Mita Wins Gold at GASCA

Mita C, Mack ‘27, a new Grade 11 student who joined the Brentwood community last fall, has made us proud as she placed first at an international competition in Taiwan. The GASCA International Music Competition consists of musicians from all around Asia coming to represent their country, and it was a very enjoyable experience for Mita. Securing a first-place finish was no easy feat, so Brentwood staff and students celebrated her win at Assembly.

Mita shared how it was “a lot of fun competing with but also connecting with others who share the same passion for drums.” Mita met new friends, learned more about music, and, most of all, made her parents proud. From a young age, Mita has played the drums and had a passion for music. She shared with me how much time and effort she and her parents had put into getting to lessons, but that never stopped them. “We’ve been preparing Mita for this competition since March of last year, so a lot of effort was put into it, but it all paid off,” her parents stated.

When deciding what school to attend, Mita and her family were amazed by the artistic opportunities that Brentwood offers to its students. Mita is a part of the Rock Band and Wind Ensemble and enjoys the experience of performing in various concerts throughout the year. The Brentwood music programs help students showcase their talents through Winter and Summer concerts, talent shows like Java Hut, and even travelling to compete in competitions. Mr Michael Keddy, one of our music teachers, shared that Mita is a “happy and diligent” student who enjoys connecting with others who love music.

Beyond the rhythm of the drums, Mita has also fully immersed herself in the athletics that Brentwood prides itself on. While music remains her primary passion, she has stepped outside of her comfort zone and tried sports such as Fitness Performance and Squash despite for the first time. She found how likable it was to have a balance between rigorous music lessons and exhilarating sport sessions. Whether it be perfecting a percussion piece or learning a new shot, Mita’s diligence is evident in everything she does around campus.

Mita’s journey, not only as a new student at Brentwood but also to the top of the podium at the GASCA competition, is inspiring and deserves to be brought to our attention. A huge thank you goes out to her parents for the unwavering support they gave her and the countless trips they made to attend various music lessons. Gratitude also goes to the Brentwood music program and teachers like Mr Keddy, who give students space to have fun and make their talents flourish. Mita is a reminder that with the right support, students can achieve anything they set their hearts on.
