Championship Grit: Brentwood Junior Boys Clinch Island Title & Provincial Berth

The Brentwood Junior Boys basketball team didn’t just win the Island Championships this past weekend, they took them. In a series of high stakes matchups defined by grit and second half surges, the boys proved they have composure to match their talent, ultimately walking away with the tournament trophy and a ticket to Provincials.

The journey began with a challenging opening match against Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS). While we suffered a rough start, we refused to let the early results dictate the game. Through a collective effort, we pulled ourselves together to orchestrate a dominant second half performance, eventually cruising to a 20 point win.

The victory set the stage for a heavyweight semifinal against Lambrick Park, a team that was yet to lose a game on the Island. The toughest opponent in the region, Lambrick tested our mettle immediately. We managed to storm to a quick 8-0 lead, but they responded fast, evening the score by the end of the first quarter.

After a tight second quarter where both sides traded big shots, we trailed by three at the half. In the locker room, Mr. Pasquale’s focus was singular: energy and defensive lockdown. “We knew Lambrick was a powerhouse, but we weren’t intimidated” noted Cris OP, Ellis ‘28 after the game. “At the half, we committed to making every possession a battle on defense.”

Our defensive intensity allowed us to build a 12 point lead heading into the final quarter. Despite a late flurry of threes from Lambrick that cut the lead to just three points with four minutes left, we remained unfazed, stretching the gap back to eight to seal the win and provincial spot.

In the final against Mark R Isfeld, the first quarter was action packed, with Teddy J, Ellis ‘28 providing major contributions to keep us ahead. By the third quarter, our pressure became too much, as the lead ballooned to 20 points.

Though Isfeld fought back to within ten, we kept our pressure up and won by 20. Tiger L, Privett ‘28 described the milestone: “The energy in the gym was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Seeing us come together during those tough stretches in the third quarter was amazing.”

In the end, there were also some individual accomplishments: Josh V, Privett ‘28 was named an All-Star and Miguel N, Whittall ‘28, took the Tournament MVP. The Junior Boys now head to Provincials as undisputed kings of the Island.
