ODP Seal Launches into Spring

As spring arrives in Brentwood, ODP eagerly seal launches back into the river, and one of the highlights is the Cowichan River Youth Kayak Festival (CRYK Fest), hosted by our dedicated ODP Leader, Mr Norman. “Each year, this exciting event attracts 60-70 enthusiastic youth from all over British Columbia” shares Mr Norman, igniting a lasting passion for kayaking and outdoor adventures. It also attracts numerous instructors who volunteer their time.

To nurture the talents of these budding paddlers, Mr Norman goes above and beyond, providing essential gear and equipment alongside thorough instruction. He is committed to ensuring that each participant has the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive environment.

This year, the participants were divided into four groups based on skill level. Group One consisted of advanced paddlers who tackled the river’s full canyon from the very first day. Group Two started with the upper section and later joined Group One for more challenging waters. Groups Three and Four got acquainted with a section known as Duck Pond before gradually advancing to the upper section of the canyon.

Mr Norman’s project is made possible by the incredible support of 22 volunteers, who play a vital role in the event. Many students (and former students) return year after year, among them is Jake R, Ellis ‘26, a seasoned participant who has attended CRYK Fest for four years. Jake has witnessed substantial growth during his time in the program, acknowledging that he has moved beyond being a novice paddler and now sees himself as “another instructor.” Having a variety of skill levels among the students allows participants to support and teach each other.

Having led this program for two decades, Mr Norman has seen many students come back as instructors and wtnessing that growth and appreciation for what he does is very rewarding. His dedication is recognized by many, including Ms. Wolinsky, who states simply that, “Mr Norman is what makes CRYK Fest possible.” As the Outdoor Pursuits program looks forward to what Mr Norman has in store next, it’s clear that this initiative not only fosters a love for kayaking but also deepens the connection to nature that resonates with participants. With this spirit, ODP is thriving and eager for the adventures that spring will bring.
