Brentonians Carry the Olympic Torch

The Olympic torch arrives in Canada on Friday. Grade 10 student Hailey T will be carrying the torch on Saturday October 31st on Vancouver Island. Over the summer Hailey wrote a letter to the Royal Bank of Canada and Coca-Cola to see if she could qualify to carry the torch. The Royal Bank didn’t respond to Hailey’s request but Coca-Cola did. She made it through four rounds of interviews before she was given the awesome news that she was going to carry the Olympic torch. She will be carrying the torch at 6:10 pm in Cedar (south of Nanaimo). She will be starting along Hemer Road and running to Cedar Road for a total of 300 meters. Her mom, Tammie (Morrison) T (Head Prefect, Class of 1979), helped Hailey through the process and will be there cheering her on.

Present math teacher and Head of the Outdoors Programme here at Brentwood, Dan Norman will also be carrying the torch. A Canadian Olympic athlete from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Mr. Norman competed in the Whitewater Slalom C1 event. He also applied to both organizations; however, it was Coca-Cola who responded in his favor. Mr. Norman will be carrying the torch on Sunday November 1st at 6:02 am (yes, a.m.!) in Nanaimo on Newcastle Ave between Bridge Street and Dawes Street.

2008 Olympic silver medalist and Class of 1996 grad, David Calder will be carrying the torch in Victoria. On Thursday, Hailey will be meeting David in Victoria where they are going to be interviewed by the radio station C-FAX and the television station The A Channel.
