Magical, but Not a Unicorn: Ellis’ Newest Member

As the school year approaches an end, the gentlemen of Ellis House have settled well into their daily lives. However, something new and four-legged has found its way into the house, and she’s not a unicorn, but a Golden Retriever puppy who has no idea just how cute she is. 

Meet Juicy Collis Handford, Ellis House’s newest and arguably most adorable boarder. She is the companion of Mr Collis Handford, Assistant Houseparent of Ellis House, who brought her home a few weeks ago. 

At just one month old, Juicy is as new to Ellis House as she is to the world. Golden Retrievers, known for their warmth and loyalty, are also known for their ability to make a tough day better. Through her amazing presence in the house, it seems as though she’s mastered all three so far in her short lifespan. 

When asked about Houseparent Mr Wismer’s thoughts on Ellis’ fluffy new addition, Mr Collis Handford describes that “Mr Wismer is a role model of mine. To know that his children can enjoy spending time with my puppy is a blessing. While he may not express much emotion towards this dog, Rennie sure does.”

As for Juicy, it turns out that “The name was assigned at birth by teenage boys,” Mr Collis Handford explains. “What could possibly go wrong?” The idea, however, was not his own; he admits, “I did not want a dog; my fiancée wanted a dog. As a result, I wanted a dog.” Despite this, “Getting a puppy has inorganically forced stressors into my relationship with Victoria; as a result, and perhaps counter-intuitively, our relationship has strengthened. Because we’ve managed to communicate and celebrate the various hardships and annoyances that come with puppy-rearing, I know she is the one for me”. 

Ellis House Captain Will L, Ellis ‘26, shares his opinion on life in Ellis House after the dog’s arrival: “Juicy’s adjustment to Ellis has been as smooth as one could hope. I can tell she truly loves Ellis, and her presence has made such a positive impact on all the boys.” Mr Collis Handford notes that “she loves Lucas L, Ellis ‘27, the most for some reason”.

As it turns out, science is on Juicy’s side. Brandon R, Ellis ‘26, a representative of the Brentwood Research, Action, and Innovation in Neuroscience Club, breaks down the mental health benefits behind animal interaction: “Studies have shown that interacting with dogs reduces cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, and this is especially true for adolescents.”

For a boarding house filled with young men away from home, Juicy has become more than just a puppy. She is someone we look forward to seeing after classes, giving us renewed energy and a chance to take a break from our busy schedules. Even during AP exam season, when student morale may not be at its best, it is members of the house like Juicy that remind me how lucky I am to be part of Ellis, and I will certainly cherish the memories made with Juicy this year.
