“Friends I Will Keep for Life”: My 5 Weeks in Guatemala

27 August 2026Jai K (Mackenzie '28)

Grade 11 student Jai K (Mackenzie ’28) spent five weeks immersed in Guatemalan culture as part of Brentwood’s summer exchange program—new this year. From joining classes at Village School to exploring ancient ruins, Jai embraced every moment—choosing to be fully present for authentic connection and shared learning. Here is Jai’s travel summary in her own words—and stay tuned to Brentwood’s social media channels for a supplemental video blog from Jai in the coming days!

Something that really stood out about my trip to Guatemala was being able to meet so many incredible people. I really enjoyed my time at Village School, and I feel as though I’ve made friends that I will keep for life. I met them through classes, sports, and even just walking around the halls. We have so much in common, and I am sure I will return to visit them.

I was also able to travel all over the country to visit beautiful places like El Paredón, Isla de Flores, Tikal, and Antigua. Every place left me in awe, and I learned so much about the culture from my host family and the locals. Personally, I also loved the food—my favourite dishes were jocón (a stew made with chicken, cilantro, and green peppers) and shukos (a street-food sandwich made with a hot dog, guacamole, cabbage, and a toasted bun).

I loved my time in Guatemala and wish I could have stayed longer, but I’m excited for the 2027 group of Brentonians who will have this opportunity next year!
