All My Sisters

The well-established traditions of Alex House go far beyond its iconic white walls. From the beginning of the year camping trip, to the Christmas dinner grade skits, to the monthly Big Little Sister traditions, memories are made. However, some of the most anticipated Alex events are left to the final month of the school year. For the first year students, these house events are new and exciting experiences to enjoy, and for the graduating students, they are reminders of years past and milestones on the road to graduation.

The first event this spring was the annual Grade 11 and 12 Brunch, a chance to bond and share wisdom with the future school leaders. On Sunday May 29th, the chatting group left Brentwood for the Merridale Ciderworks Bistro in Cobble Hill. While enjoying a fabulous brunch, the grads and future prefects had a rare opportunity to spend time together outside of the house. Over the course of the brunch it became clear that the Alex Grads of 2012 have a wonderful vision for the coming year; this was shown by their hard work on the Grad Fashion show.

One of most anticipated post-grad events, the Grad fashion show is the first house event organized and hosted by the Grade 11s. For the students who were not at the Graduation Dinner and Dance in Vancouver, it is a chance to see the grads in their dresses as they dance and strut down the runway. The Grads were escorted onto the stage by Mr. Warner, and treated to mock Bellini’s and chocolate covered strawberries post show. Many thanks to the Grade 11 girls who put in the time and effort to make this such a memorable evening!

In great contrast to the formality of the fashion show, the annual game of Assassin commenced on Tuesday at exactly 11am. The game is based on elimination, with each girl given a clothespin with the name of another Alexandra student on it. To eliminate that person, one must “pin” the person whose name has been drawn. Safety can be found in dorm rooms, classes, the dining hall and linking arms with another Alex student. This game brings out the unexpected sides of many players and leads to echoing shouts and chases around campus. The winner is the recipient of pizza, but more importantly the ‘Assassin’ title and the esteem of winning the game.

Although our days in Alex House are drawing to a close, these house activities have, once again, set the tone for a perfect end to the year.
