Young Debaters Start Strong

This weekend, after a mere week and a half of debate practice, eight young Grade 9 students ventured into the almost entirely foreign world of a debate tournament. With excellent teaching from several senior students and their Head Coach, Mrs. Rebecca Day Reynolds, they displayed skills that impressed every judge they met. Sara S and Hannah C won three of their four rounds, as did Kevin D and Sam P.

But it was not only the Grade 9s who impressed the UVic High School Open Debate Tournament judges, it was also our Junior and Senior teams as well. After twelve long hours we came home with Best Speaker for Junior, Liam K, and Senior, Ian M.

If that wasn’t enough, we were delighted in finding out that the top two senior teams were both from Brentwood: Joey H & Katie Z in first and Oliver M & Georgia K in second. Then we got the satisfaction of watching those two debate on the matter of extraterrestrial security.

After a long but successful Saturday, with pizza on the bus ride home, we returned tired but victorious.
