March Break Rowing
With 6 days of snow, hail, wind, rain, and a ten to zero male-female ratio, the second week of Spring Break did not, by a long shot, resemble paradise. Thankfully, the sun did eventually come out and determination, as well as a strong sense of team spirit, played a major part in blending the 7 am, 1 degree mornings seamlessly into the rest of our break. By the end, all agreed that it was an incredibly worthwhile experience.
In contrast to the usual Spring Break rowing camp, the Barrette family generously accommodated the senior rowers in their house on the lake. After packing our bags into the coach boat, we rowed the small boats to “Barrette Beach” and kept them there for the remainder of camp for afternoon rows. Unfortunately, our regular coxie, Rielly M, could not be with us, but Malcolm C stepped up to the plate as the Varsity coxswain for the week and did an excellent job.
Each morning we motored over to the Shawnigan boathouse where we had two practices with Ridley College from Ontario as well as our fellow islanders from SLS. Evenings included Luke B guiding the less-experienced gamers in assaulting zombies, hours of Halo, and Nick R and Joel B playing a game involving raising ducks. An endless supply of food was available, and delicious meals from the wonderful ladies of the Brentwood cafeteria were provided for dinner each evening.
It was a great week of training. The coaching expertise, combined with the bonds we formed as a crew, resulted in a truly memorable camp. We are looking forward to applying the lessons we learned at the camp in the next month of training, as we head towards the upcoming Brentwood Regatta and beyond.
