Academic Colours: There’s Nothing Average About Them

Striving for academic excellence is something we hope that all our students feel is an important and attainable goal for themselves at Brentwood. One measure of success is to achieve an Honours standing by the end of the school year. In BC this is defined as an average at or above 80%.
In recognition of this, Brentwood awards Academic Colours marked by a distinctive lapel pin for each grade level. Last year, no fewer than 58% of our students reached this benchmark by June. When students are holding an average of 86% and above at the end of term 1 and again after term 2, we are pleased to award these colors early, and so, last week at assembly, 146 students were brought up on stage for a handshake from Mr. Patel and the presentation of a much coveted pin.
The “average academic average” across the school is something that we monitor from term to term and year to year and by grade group. Though there has been a slight increase in this average over the past 5 years from 78.5 in 2007 to 80.6 in 2012, we like to think it is due to a positive trend in student accomplishment rather than “grade inflation”. I would like to think that this implies that to be average at Brentwood means to be academically excellent.
