Second Term Successes for Girls’ Rugby

On Sunday the 17th of February, the girl’s rugby team got their first taste of competition at the mini tournament hosted by Shawnigan Lake School. The purpose of the mini tournament was to gain knowledge and experience for all three teams participating. Brentwood, Shawnigan, and the Castaway Wanderers fought their hardest in order to show the promise each team has developed thus far.

The Brentwood girls were bused over at 11:00 in order to warm up sufficiently before kick-off at twelve against Shawnigan. We warmed up for a good thirty minutes and stepped on the field nervous and anxious.

We received the first kick and pushed forward.

We moved a quickly rucked ball to the wing where Shannyn O scored the first try of the game. Scoring first against our biggest rival was an encouraging boost. The team continued to come up together in defense, running hard and driving low in offense, gaining lots of ground. Karly D caught a wide ball and with her immense speed ran through the gaps in defense and scored the second try. Brentwood was happily victorious in the first game against Shawnigan, the final score 12-5. The well-earned win proved the Brentwood girls to be naturally skilled and promising for the competitive term over the horizon.

Brentwood kicked-off in the second game against the Castaway Wanderers of Victoria, who are a very young team wishing to improve and gain experience just like the rest of us. This game was more about the younger players getting out and having fun while learning the game. Brentwood showed lots of skills and came out on top. Nambi M scored two tries in this game with singles going to Mackenna H, Karly D, Ciel A & Georgia W. Lauren A slotted five conversions. The game finished 40-10 for the Brentwood girls.

The coaches, Mr. Cowie, Mr. Felix, and Mr. Burrows were very pleased with the team’s commitment and hard work in both games. “For me, it was successful because we improved as the day went on. A promising start” is the follow up Mr. Felix gave for the team after the tournament.

The Brentwood girls have proved to themselves, the coaches, and the other two teams that we will be a tough team to beat and there is still much room for improvement.
