You’ve Got Mail

With Spring Break only weeks away, and the sunny days of Third Term promising a bright future, Grade 12s have begun to realize that graduation is no longer leisurely pecking away at its shell. The final term of our Brentwood careers is soon to hatch.

The end of February is an uneasy time for Grad ‘13. First term, prior to the dark winter months, was filled with the intense rush of university applications. Mr. Colistro, Mr. Rodrigues and Mrs. Coull were teeming with piles of paperwork for us, and continuously aided the grads towards future ventures. In Second Term, for many of the grads, has become ‘acceptance term’, an anxiety and excitement filled time.

Every day at lunch, you can observe grads like Margaret H.L surreptitiously checking the mail list to see if a letter has arrived. “Opening the letter was, if anything, weird. I didn’t really know what to expect. Then, when I opened it and read the first few letters, it was mainly relief. Then I really realized what it meant…and I was so excited.”

Margaret, like many other grads, received one of her first acceptances. These letters and the decisions the grads will have to make, are some of the most important of their lives. Where someone decides to go to university will shape his or her entire future and will provide a completely different life to that of Brentwood. Grads have already received Canadian acceptances, from universities such as Queens and McGill, and even from the United States and Europe.

Some find the future daunting (I certainly do) and will choose to take a year off to explore other options. These simple pieces of paper, and what we decide to do with them, will play a role in determining our fates. Brentwood has guided us so far, and we are in for the final turn before we depart the Brentwood nest.

As Third Term comes rolling, so do the acceptances, and so do the realization of what is to come. High school is almost over, goodbyes are soon to come, and change is underway.
