The Other Side of Regatta

Thousands of people have wandered Brentwood’s campus since Friday afternoon.

Though each Brentwood student is given a specific job to ensure that everything goes according to plan, the weekend isn’t all work. On the contrary, quite a lot of the time is spent wandering the plaza, watching races and sampling foods.

The down time is much needed and highly enjoyed as shifts start as early as 5 am with the first races. Be it soaking up the first hints of the summer sun, or spending time with friends, students everywhere have smiles on their faces.

“It’s just a great experience, and a ton of fun to be a part of,” a girl tells me. “I love it so much. Regatta weekend is the best time of year.”

“It’s the atmosphere that brings me back again and again,” a visiting rower claims.

From tossing rugby balls on grassy patches to sitting on the waterfront, the campus is alight with a rare kind of spirit; it reminds us of how fortunate we are as a community.

As the last tents are collapsed, and the visiting crews board their buses home, the ambiance of Regatta shifts from lively hustle-and-bustle to the annual post-regatta depression while we say goodbye to the magic for another year.
